(Source: pixabay.com) Artificial intelligence has the potential to boost the economy and improve everyday life for the better. But the robot revolution holds a looming presence in society as some jobs are predicted to become obsolete and taken on by a robotic replacement in the very near future. AI is promoted as the way of the future. As society becomes more reliant on computerised technologies, some of the farther fetch sci-fi inventions are starting to becoming a reality. For example, facial recognition to unlock smartphones, voice-activated speakers, and the robots with the potential to take over people's jobs. Whilst AI and other robotic technologies have opened up numerous opportunities in multiple areas of public life such as healthcare, education and in some cases have proven to be more beneficial to the environment - the potential of making some of the highest grossing jobs obsolete poses too much of a danger to the function and wellbeing of peoples working lives. Automation poses a bigger threat to the future decline of jobs than globalisation, especially in jobs with a manufacturing element. During his farewell speech in 2016, former President Obama claimed, “The next wave of economic dislocations won’t come from overseas. It will come from the relentless pace of automation that makes a lot of good middle-class jobs obsolete.” AI is set to exceed humans in specific job roles, healthcare being a big one. For example, an artificial ‘chatbot’ is expected to remove the need for GP’s and other medical examiners. The computerised system is expected to be faster and more efficient when diagnosing patients. As well as being able to give a more exact diagnostics, it is expected that the technology will develop further to be able to carry out medical procedures and operations. The accuracy of the technology is expected to improve patient outcome and should be readily available and installed in 60% of all hospitals by as soon as 2025.

Public transport is one of the highest grossing job roles in society, therefore its elimination of employees in favour of autonomous vehicles poses a real income issue for millions of people. A harsh reality for some, it is estimated that around 2.2 million jobs will be affected by the introduction of automated vehicles. Preparing for the future of Artificial Intelligence, society isn’t expected to cope with the dominant impact of automation. No one knows for sure the extent of AI’s impact as it is for the most part still in its early stages of development. However, the prediction for its abilities appears limitless. The full potential of AI technology is uncertain, but automation is a definite potential threat to future employment opportunities, especially for the younger generations.
